  12.           The precision of the first flight path correction
  13. for the 
  14.   
  15. Viking 1 spacecraft on August 27 has eliminated the need for
  16. any further 
  17.   
  18. corrections until the spacecraft is close to Mars, the Viking
  19. Project 
  20.   
  21. office announced today. 
  22.   
  23.           The August midcourse maneuver was designed to
  24. correct the 
  25.   
  26. f1ight path by 2OO,OOO miles and change the time of arrival
  27. at Mars 
  28.   
  29. by 3l hours. 
  30.   
  31.           The resulting flight path was less than 2OO miles
  32. off the 
  33.   
  34. target and one minute off the desired arrival time. 
  35.   
  36.           Viking 1 will arrive at Mars on June 19, 1976,
  37. after traveling 
  38.   
  39. more than 4OO million miles, and drift slightly off course
  40. due to the 
  41.   
  42. effects of solar radiation pressure and venting of gases from
  43. the space- 
  44.   
  45. craft. 
  46.   
  47.           A midcourse maneuver to be conducted about one
  48. month before 
  49.   
  50. arrival at Mars will make the final adjustments to the flight
  51. path. 
  52.   
  53.           Viking 1 was launched August 2O and today is
  54. 3,92O,OOO miles î  
  55. from Earth and in excellent operating condition.
